A student at Discovery High School in Lawrenceville was arrested after being caught with a gun on the school grounds, confirmed Principal Marci Sledge in a letter sent to parents. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the principal emphasized that the student did not threaten anyone with the weapon but the school is handling the issue with the utmost severity.
Although the student did not show, point, or threaten anyone with the weapon, I want to reassure you that we are taking this situation seriously," Sledge stated in her letter obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. Officials did not release the student's identity or the specific charges they are facing, but Sledge assured that the student is facing criminal charges along with "maximum school disciplinary consequences." This is in line with the school's zero-tolerance policy on weapons on campus.
Principal Sledge addressed parents' concerns in the communication, repeating that weapons have no place in the educational environment. "I understand hearing about this is unsettling," she wrote. WSB-TV reports that Sledge commented, "Guns and weapons have no place in our school."
