This groundbreaking panel is Gascón's sixth since taking office in December 2020, underlining his commitment to forging a more inclusive and trusting bond with the diverse communities of Los Angeles.
"Our County is a rich tapestry of cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds, and it's imperative that our criminal justice system reflects and respects this diversity," Gascón said, according to an announcement made by his office. The advisory serves as a sounding board for issues at the intersection of faith and justice, aiming to combat religious hate crimes and champion cultural competency.
Faith leaders from an array of backgrounds form the foundation of this diverse advisory board. Notable members bring with them decades of experience in social justice, interfaith collaboration, and community engagement – elements that promise to shape the board's vision and its influence on policy-making.
The team includes Rabbi Sharon Brous, renowned for her work in social justice and her participation in presidential inaugural events, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, a recognized leader in peacebuilding who has been honored as Southern California Mediation Association's "Peacemaker of the Year," the District Attorney's office reports. Their combined expertise is targeted at improving inclusivity within the DA's office and the broader justice system.
Meetings are planned to occur regularly, offering DA Gascón and his team firsthand insights from the faith-based community. It's a dedicated effort to foster a justice system that not only punishes crime but also understands the profound impact of prejudice and discrimination on the souls and psyche of the people it serves.
