A blaze tore through The Maya apartments complex in northeast San Antonio late Tuesday night, sending one man to the hospital with serious burns and leaving several families homeless. The San Antonio Fire Department responded to the emergency call at around 10:52 p.m., discovering a rapidly spreading fire and a victim with severe injuries at the scene on the 1900 block of Loop 410 at Ira Lee Road.
"Looks likes the damage is going to be held to six apartments total, four of them with fire damage and the other two with smoke and water damage," a San Antonio Fire Department spokesperson stated, as obtained by KENS 5. Reports confirm that firefighters were able to control the flames within about 20 minutes, but not before it inflicted significant damage to multiple units within the complex.
According to KSAT, the fire originated on the second floor in a bedroom. Firefighters managed to rescue a dog from a first-floor apartment and scanned a total of 18 apartments. Despite the swift action, six apartments were impacted by the flames, with four sustaining heavy fire damage and two affected by water and smoke.
The injured man was taken to an area hospital in "serious" condition, though there were no other injuries reported. An apartment manager has stepped in to aid displaced residents from the damaged apartments, and the Red Cross is on standby should any issues arise. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and as of now, there is no estimate of the damages caused to the apartment complex.
