It was a showdown in Texas that saw the Dallas Mavericks come out on top against the San Antonio Spurs, with a final score of 113-107 on Tuesday night. This victory sealed the deal on a season sweep for the Mavericks against the Spurs, going 4-0 in their head-to-head matchups.
The dynamic duo of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic proved too much for the Spurs, as Irving put up 28 points while Doncic managed to secure yet another triple-double, despite a shooting slump that had him 6 of 27 from the field, according to Spectrum Local News. The rough shooting night didn't hinder Dallas's spirits, "Yes, it does count as a ‘W,’" Mavericks coach Jason Kidd was quoted, “Not all wins are pretty.”
San Antonio's efforts were led by Tre Jones' 22 points and nine assists, along with Devin Vassell who added 19 points. Rising star Victor Wembanyama, despite the loss, put up a solid performance with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks, marking his 37th double-double of the season, as per a report by KENS 5.
Despite the Spurs' gritty competition, turnovers were their Achilles' heel. "That's been our problem (turnovers) for the main part of the season. Just been turning the ball over," Vassell told KENS 5, "Playing a transition, they (Dallas) have closers with Kyrie (Irving) and Luka. Special players like that, we can't give them more opportunities to put the ball in the basket."
Coach Gregg Popovich reflected on the efforts of the Spurs, "We out-rebounded them. We shot better than they did. We out-scored them in the third quarter and out-scored them in the fourth quarter. We had the same number of assists," he said after the game, emphasizing the tight competition despite his team's multiple mistakes, "I couldn't be more proud of the way we played," he added, signaling optimism for the future of the team despite their 15-54 record. Spurs fans look ahead as their team prepares to host the Memphis Grizzlies at the AT&T Center on Friday night.
