Last Friday night, what started as a massive sideshow in Vallejo ended with a high-speed chase and the arrest of a Mercedes-Benz driver. The Vallejo Police Department reported that around 10:45 P.M. on March 3, they, along with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Air Unit, responded to complaints of approximately 100 cars blocking roads and disrupting traffic around Sonoma Blvd. and Lemon St.," according to a statement.
Upon the officers' arrival, directed by the CHP Air Unit, which witnessed a Mercedes-Benz performing dangerous stunts, a pursuit ensued swiftly. The chase tore through the city of Richmond, leading the Benz's driver to abandon his vehicle and attempt to flee by jumping into an accomplice's car. The driver failed to realize that the CHP Air Unit was monitoring from above, still, their escape plans were foiled by vigilant cops.
The Vallejo Police Department, with aid from the CHP and the Richmond PD, successfully detained the individual, who was subsequently booked into the Solano County Jail. His car was also impounded following the incident. The department took to social media to thank its fellow officers and to dish out a stern warning about the price of illegal sideshows.
Vallejo authorities have responded to the illicit street performance by reminding the public that participating in illegal sideshows can cost more than a night of thrills, as penalties include vehicle impoundment with a staggering amount of associated costs. According to the Vallejo Police Department, fees can add up to roughly $2,589, including tow release, actual towing, storage, and additional after-hour charges. Besides the pocket-punching fines, onlookers also risk arrest under the city ordinance, which prohibits spectators at street races and reckless driving exhibitions.
