Commuters brace yourselves: a critical artery of Metro Atlanta's transportation network is going under the knife. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, starting 10 a.m. March 19, a section of SR 280/South Cobb Drive is set to be completely closed from Fairground Street SE to US 41/SR 3/Cobb Parkway as Georgia's Department of Transportation (GDOT) tackles an emergency replacement of a deteriorating culvert.

The surgery on South Cobb Drive isn't a quick in-and-out. It's expected to last around two months, with GDOT and local traffic ops teams working hand in hand to quickly adjust signal timing and keep things moving as smoothly as possible. GDOT has mapped out detour routes to help navigate around the closure, but delays are a given during this period. Motorists are encouraged to check out real-time travel updates on 511GA services before hitting the road.

This isn’t just any typical road repair. The aging culvert, dating back to the 1940s, was designed for a very different era and has now buckled under the strain of modern traffic and severe weather. 11Alive reported that GDOT's Natalie Dale said, “It hasn’t been touched since the 1940s ... GDOT inherited this stretch of road in the 60s so it hasn’t been touched or looked at since.”

The closure is more than a little hiccup for locals. Andrea Varela, who depends on this thoroughfare for her daily commute, told 11Alive, “The traffic now and a whole bunch of other things combined into one, now I gotta find another way to quickly get to work and get home.” Only Dobbins and Lockheed Martin employees will have access to the area as the road works unfold, with everyone else advised to follow detour signs. GDOT warns that any adverse weather could extend the closure, so patience will have to be a virtue for the drivers of Cobb County.
