A familiar Metro Detroit bakery has reached the end of its half-century run. Butter-Nut Bakery will soon bake its last batch of cookies, with owners Desa and Vano Acovski set to close its doors in mid-April, the couple told ClickOnDetroit. Desa Acovski, handling the majority of the bakery duties since her sister-in-law's health took her from the shop, has been a fixture at the Center Line establishment since 1975 alongside her husband.
The decision to shutter Butter-Nut Bakery was influenced by the couple's desire to spend time with their grandchildren. "We’re gonna relax. We’ve got five grandchildren to look after and hopefully, you know, help raise," Desa Acovski said in a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit. The beloved local spot, known for its old recipes and welcoming atmosphere, will be celebrated by the community for its final Easter.
As the impending closure looms, nostalgia grips the bakery's loyal patrons. Longtime customer Herb Wilson lamented the loss, saying, "It’s gonna be terrible," according to ClickOnDetroit. The bakery, a fixture in the area since 1971, has served the community with a variety of confections, from butter cookies to decadent pastries. Desa Acovski emphasized their commitment to the business over the years and the clientele they've built in an interview with Macomb Daily: "We are not closing because we are not busy. We are closing because we are retiring."
The community response has been significant, with residents sharing memories and expressing gratitude for the bakery's service. As for the bakery's legacy, Desa Acovski summed it up to BNNBreaking, "Things do happen in life, you do have to move on." The aroma of fresh-baked cookies and the warm atmosphere have made Butternut Bakery a homely enclave for its patrons, who, even asked to come back to pay later, bring cash to square away their debts as a testament to the sense of trust and community the bakery fostered.
Vano Acovski's health, complicated by a possible knee replacement, further influenced the decision to retire. The couple now prepares to pass on more than just a business—they leave behind a community cornerstone. And while their customers will miss them dearly, the Acovskis look forward to the next chapter of their lives. Meanwhile, Butter-Nut Bakery will remain a sweet memory ingrained in the hearts of many in Center Line, Michigan.
