A high-speed climax unfolded on I-69 as a Michigan mother with warrants for alleged drug offenses led police on a harrowing pursuit, topping speeds of 100 mph and involving her child in the perilous chase before finally being arrested in Indiana, as detailed in local news reports.
According to CBS Detroit, it was Friday evening when the Branch County Sheriff's Office in Michigan signalled for support while tracking a brown Chevrolet Astro minivan carrying the suspects and a child; Michigan authorities were pursuing Brienne Lee Bicknell, 37, of Quincy, who was wanted for drug-related charges, the chase escalated crossing state lines and it was the Steuben County Sheriff's Office that deployed stop sticks to slow the fleeing vehicle, success came when the minivan struck the spikes deflating its passenger side tires.
The ordeal prolonged at reduced speeds—the van limping on two intact tires—despite multiple attempts by deputies to employ additional stop sticks, which failed to further disable the van, as per a HNGN report; Bicknell attempted a U-turn mid-highway, her maneuvers botched, resulting in the minivan halting in the median where law enforcement, including Angola officers and Indiana State Police, achieved custody of both adults.
Bicknell was detained along with a male passenger, who was eventually released at the scene since his Michigan warrants were non-extraditable in Indiana; the child in question was taken to a hospital as a precaution, unscathed by the chase, and subsequently placed under the care of the Indiana Department of Child Services, as CBS Detroit reported.
Bicknell faces charges including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, neglect of a dependent, and possession of both a controlled substance and marijuana; preliminary charges include operating a vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving—detailing from reports by WANE—as the woman awaits her fate at the Steuben County Jail, while the case gathers more details as the investigation unfolds.
