A fatal shooting by a Michigan State Police trooper has prompted an investigation in Coldwater, after a suspect brandishing an AR-style rifle was killed during a confrontation, as confirmed by state authorities.
The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Richard Wilkinson, was the target of a multi-count felony arrest warrant, including home invasion, which led Coldwater police to request backup from the Michigan State Police Emergency Support team on the night of March 18, around 8 p.m. on Lucky Drive, CBS News Detroit reported; confronting officers with a lethal weapon, Wilkinson was fatally shot by a trooper, after Wilkinson having reportedly barricaded himself in his home and declining to surrender peacefully to police negotiations.

A resident, Angie Falkenstein, witnessed the disturbance from across the street expressing her alarm about the events and reflecting on her brief interaction with Wilkinson, "My husband just met him yesterday and for maybe 30 minutes they spoke, and then that was about it; as for it happening, the world is a cruel place, but we just have to move on and learn something from this," she explained in an interview with News Channel 3.
