The Milpitas Police Department has issued a warning about a DUI checkpoint scheduled for this Friday, and recent arrests highlight the ongoing issue of drunk driving in the community. The department took to its Facebook page to inform locals that law enforcement will be screening drivers for signs of alcohol impairment on March 15, from the evening hours into the early morning.
Last weekend saw a series of alcohol-related arrests starting on March 8, with a 23-year-old Milpitas woman nabbed with a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit after a midnight traffic stop; she wasn't alone, as a 28-year-old man from Fremont faced the same fate early that morning, both were booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for DUI. The following day, another 28-year-old Milpitas resident landed himself in the clink when an observant citizen reported his car stalled on VTA light rail tracks; his blood alcohol level also came in at double the legal limit, affirming the perils that still haunt the roads. Additionally, a proactive Alcohol, Beverage, Control Operation led to the issuance of citations for three scofflaws caught in the act of supplying booze to the underage near McCarthy Boulevard.
The department's weekend wrap-up concluded with a Sunday morning DUI arrest involving a 25-year-old Milpitas man stopped near Los Coches and Horizon Drive. Authorities continue to emphasize the illegality of driving under any impairment, be it from alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, or marijuana, and urge anyone planning to drink or take potentially impairing substances to appoint a sober driver or opt for a ride-share service. They implore the public to report suspected impaired driving by calling 911, an act that could potentially save lives.
