Residents of Milton looking to put the brakes on speeding in their neighborhoods now have the green light to do so. The city has opened up applications for creating Residential Speed Zones (RSZ), a new initiative aiming to curb excessive speed and improve local street safety, according to the City of Milton's announcement. The development of RSZ is a strategic move stemming from Milton's Local Road Safety Plan, intending to protect drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists that share the streets. Interested citizens now, after learning about the RSZ program, can directly influence the roads around their homes, ensuring a safer environment for their loved ones, reported the city's official website.
Setting up an RSZ is no casual undertaking, though. It starts with a citizen-submitted application and, if the area falls under a Homeowners Association (HOA), then its leadership must spearhead the process. To push forward, the support of at least 67% of residents living in the proposed zone is required, as "Public Works Director Sara Leaders told" the city's news release. Additionally, specific criteria must be met for a roadway to be considered for an RSZ, including lower speed limits, a minimum length, a daily vehicle trip threshold, and the ability to be listed on the State of Georgia’s “radar permit” list.
Apart from RSZs, the city employs other measures like traffic enforcement, educational campaigns, and engineering solutions to enhance road safety. With a dedicated public works team, Milton coordinates with the Georgia Department of Transportation to reduce speed limits, a move that already encompasses several major connector roads.
