Schools across Minnesota are set to see a clear definition of the role of School Resource Officers (SROs) after a pivotal bill cruised through its final committee hurdle and is now bound for the Senate floor. Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) affirmed Thursday that the bill, spearheaded by Senator Bonnie Westlin (DFL-Plymouth), has garnered the necessary backing after extensive discussion and input from a coalition that spans educational figureheads, law enforcement, and various advocates. Senator Murphy noted the bill's expected to attract robust bipartisan support mirroring that seen in the House, where it previously passed by an overwhelming vote of 124 to 8, as reported by the Minnesota Senate DFL.
This legislative effort, which Majority Leader Murphy, a finance committee member, stated, "will clarify the role of SROs in our schools," was lauded for its student-first approach. "DFLers have always insisted the bill put the safety and well-being of our students first, and help create a learning environment for them to succeed," Murphy said, echoing the widespread consensus that the proposal will sail through the Senate with bipartisan backing, as noted by Minnesota Senate DFL.
