In Oakland, a rampant surge of smash-and-grab robberies has the city on high alert. According to a public safety advisory by the Oakland Police Department (OPD), despite overall crime rates going down, this specific brand of theft is on the rise. Victims find themselves targeted while inside their vehicles, with robbers forcefully taking their possessions from the passenger side after shattering windows. "In several recent cases, victims were either sitting in their vehicles or stopped while driving when approached by one or more individuals," the OPD statement detailed. These incidents, while a small portion of all robberies, have raised considerable concern.
While the OPD has not been able to fully disclose exact details of their response, they have begun to quickly adapt by deploying additional officers in hot spots for these robberies. The city's officials and law enforcement urge citizens to remain vigilant and to take precautionary measures such as being aware of their surroundings and stowing items out of sight. The advisory explicitly advises, "Remain Calm. Do not resist," underlining the importance of safety over possessions. With the situation developing, the OPD has requested the public's assistance for any information that could lead to the halt of these crimes.
It's not all dire news for Oakland, though; burglaries have significantly decreased. As reported by the OPD, "As of March 10, 2024, burglaries have decreased by nearly 50% in the City of Oakland," marking a steep decline from the previous year's figure of 3,480 to the current 1,853 incidents. This success contrasts the worrying 32% hike in robberies, jumping from 540 last year to 715 to date this year. With this mixed bag of progress and setbacks, the community is called to band together for the common goal: "Working together, we can make Oakland Safer!!" assures the OPD advisory.
Residents are assisted with a list of precautions to reduce risk, including not to leave items on display inadvertently and to report any suspicious activity promptly. When in danger, the OPD advises driving to a safe location such as a police or fire station and then calling 911 – a straight-to-point strategy to deter would-be thieves. The message is clear: awareness, non-resistance, and community cooperation are key in curbing the crime wave. For anyone with information on the robbery uptick, the OPD is reachable at 510-238-3326.
