The teenage Oxford High School shooter, Ethan Crumbley, has been involved in a skirmish with another inmate at the Thumb Correctional Facility in Lapeer, according to officials. In a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit, an incident on the evening of March 19 led to no serious injuries, with staff intervening promptly in the Youthful Housing Unit designated for inmates under 18.
The altercation marks Crumbley's third misconduct since his December 2023 incarceration at the Thumb prison. The Michigan Department of Corrections indicated that Crumbley, who is serving a life sentence without parole for the 2021 school shooting, was cited for horseplay on Jan. 3 and another fight on Jan. 7. After spending more than three hours daily working with educational staff, Crumbley will join the adult population on April 28, turning 18, reported by The Detroit News.
Both Crumbley and the other unnamed 17-year-old involved in the latest fight face potential sanctions pending review. Sanctions could include cell restrictions or loss of privileges, as Kyle Kaminski, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesperson, told ClickOnDetroit. The prison's segregated unit was temporarily locked down following the clash.
Following the altercation, Crumbley was taken to the hospital for evaluation and later returned to the facility—details surrounding the fight's cause were not disclosed. The prison staff, having quickly suppressed the brawl, confirmed that no weapons were used, as per MDOC statements.
The prison strife comes ahead of the scheduled April sentencing for Crumbley's parents, James and Jennifer, both convicted of involuntary manslaughter tied to the school tragedy. Families of the victims remain fervent in their calls for broader accountability, particularly targeting Oxford school officials and demanding further investigations into the school district's conduct, as per findings shared by CBS News Detroit.
