Once again, drivers cruising along the U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) in Philadelphia need to gear up for another round of traffic hurdles. PennDOT has their hands full as they continue to work on the hefty $100.6 million Wayne Junction Viaduct rehabilitation project over the spiderweb of SEPTA tracks and atop the historic Nicetown neighborhood. Those commuting should brace themselves for lane closures slated for next week, the state agency confirmed today.

The lane closures are essential for the PennDOT's contractors to buckle down and handle post-construction punch list tasks, all part of the wrap-up for the Viaduct project. Motorists should take note of the planned disruptions: Starting Monday, March 25, through to Thursday, a March 28, a periodic single-lane closure looms on the southbound U.S. 1 stretch between 9th Street and Fox Street from 6:00 PM until 5:30 AM the next day. Concurrently, the northbound lanes will also see similar restrictions between Fox Street and 9th Street, but kicking off an hour later at 7:00 PM.

In a statement posted on PennDOT's official update, the agency details the temporary lane shutdowns and encourages drivers to plan ahead to minimize any travel inconveniences. This phase of the project underscores the department's commitment to the safe and sound reconstruction of one of the city's key arteries.
