A man was fatally shot Saturday night at a southeast Austin apartment complex, and police have since detained a person of interest in connection to the incident.
Officers from the Austin Police Department (APD) were called to the scene at The Patton West apartments, located at 2207 Wickersham Lane, around 9:40 p.m. upon receiving multiple reports of gunfire, according to KXAN. Upon arrival, they discovered a man who appeared to have been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving measures being performed.
The identity of the victim was not immediately released as the investigation into Austin’s 14th homicide of the year got underway. A person of interest was detained on site, although no suspect description or information on the detainee's connection to the victim or the complex has been provided by APD.
APD public information officer Jeremy Fisher described the area of the shooting as a "high-volume area" during an early Sunday briefing and emphasized that investigators believed the incident was isolated with no ongoing threat to the public. This characterization was reported by CBS Austin, which also noted that police were not sure if either individual involved had lived at the complex.
Authorities are soliciting help from the community for additional information. Witnesses or anyone with information regarding the incident are encouraged to contact the APD homicide tip line at 512-477-3588 or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS (8477).
