In a major NFL trade, the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to send their star edge rusher Haason Reddick to the New York Jets, as initially reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and later confirmed by NBC Sports Philadelphia. The Eagles will receive a conditional 2026 third-round pick in return, which could turn into a second-rounder if Reddick meets certain performance metrics with his new team.
According to Schefter, the condition requires Reddick to play at least 67.5 percent of the defensive snaps and to notch double figures in sacks. Reddick, having racked up at least ten sacks in each of his last four seasons, is one of only two players in the NFL to achieve this feat alongside the Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett. The Jets aim to significantly boost their pass rush and put themselves back in playoff contention with this acquisition.
After spending two years with the Eagles, where Reddick recorded an impressive total of 27 sacks, he will move on to the Jets who are hustling to build a stronger roster around their new talent. Reddick will join a defense that already boasts Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, as USA TODAY Sports reports. Reddick’s move is seen as part of the Jets' aggressive play to end their longstanding playoff drought, having not appeared since the 2010 season.
The trade comes after the Eagles signed Bryce Huff, formerly of the Jets, and guaranteed a part of defensive end Josh Sweat's 2024 salary. With other talents like Brandon Graham and Nolan Smith on the roster, Philly seemed too populated at the edge rusher position, making Reddick expendable. "All kinds of juice and gas off the edge. He's definitely a problem," Jets coach Robert Saleh said of Reddick in a statement obtained by ESPN, praising his versatility and dynamic ability.
The Jets have been busy bolstering their lineup during the offseason, including bringing in veterans such as tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses, and wide receiver Mike Williams, to rapidly turn things around for the team. Meanwhile, the Eagles have to now work with a revamped defensive line post-Reddick, but it seems they're well-prepared with their recent signings and draft picks, as reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia.
