Tragedy struck Philadelphia's Ogontz neighborhood when 17-year-old Dayemen Taylor was shot and killed at a SEPTA bus stop on Monday. According to 6abc, Taylor, a student at Imhotep Institute Charter High School, was among a group of teenagers targeted by gunfire while waiting for a bus. The school, in the wake of the shooting, is temporarily shuttered as it grapples with the loss.
Emotions were palpable as District Attorney Larry Krasner spoke about the incident, visibly moved by the senseless violence that continues to plague the city's streets. "As you know, this has been an issue going back some time. Even in my position in school safety, where after school we know has become one of the most dangerous times when the kids move away from school," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel was quoted as saying by 6abc. Authorities have not yet to make an arrest, and the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
The School District of Philadelphia confirmed that all teenage victims were students of Imhotep. In a report by CBS News, it was revealed that SEPTA bus video cameras captured the incident, which is expected to aid the police in their ongoing investigation. Still, the community awaits answers as the shooters remain at large.
DA Krasner, in the meantime, is ensuring a thorough examination of all evidence. "We will certainly have more information, I would say, by early next week,” he told WHYY. Amidst questions about a potential conflict of interest in the case, Krasner remained firm. "It’s not something we thought about a whole lot. I don’t think there is," he maintained. The community now waits, hoping for justice and a measure of peace to eventually be restored.
