A Philadelphia high school teacher has been accused of a sordid attempt to engage in sexual activities with a former student, police said. Percy Fields, 32, a teacher at the city's prestigious Girls' High School, is now facing charges that include unlawful contact with a minor and sexual abuse of children. After being removed from his position at the school in January, Fields was arrested in connection with the allegations involving a 16-year-old girl, once under his instruction.
In a troubling twist to the case, 6abc reports that the accused allegedly used CashApp, a mobile payment service, as a means to transfer money to the teenager under the guise of helping her buy food. It was after this transaction that Fields is said to have sought explicit photos and further sexual favors in exchange for more money. His strategy unraveled when a fellow student, having caught wind of the arrangement, alerted a counselor who subsequently contacted the Philadelphia Police SVU.
The School District of Philadelphia issued a statement outlining the support available for students and their families during this distressing time. "Safeguarding the well-being of students is our top priority," the District stated, directing those with concerns to reach out to school counselors or local resources for support, as reported by NBC Philadelphia. In an additional measure, the statement instructed anyone with information on potentially inappropriate adult-student behaviors to report to ChildLine.
With the legal process now underway, the District Attorney's Office is pushing for a high bail and a "Stay Away Order." Amidst the hearings, the School District in coordination with state and local agencies, maintains a hard stance against any form of misconduct among its staff. Fields, who is barred from the school premises pending the outcome of the investigation, is reported by FOX 29 to face counts including corruption of minors and criminal use of communication facility on top of the possession of an instrument of crime.
The community has been shaken by the accusations, seen as a grave breach of the trust placed in educators. The school and district are continuing to emphasize their commitment to student safety and proper conduct from staff, providing assistance to those affected by the incident and ensuring resources remain accessible for their well-being. More developments in the case against Fields are anticipated as the investigations proceed.
