A tragic turn of events at a Phoenix park left two dogs dead and a community in uproar. According to 12News, a man claimed self-defense after shooting the pair of canines near Paradise Lane and 56th Street. The incident, which occurred last Thursday around 4:30 p.m., prompted the Phoenix Police Department to respond to the scene.
The owners of the dogs, identified as Jennifer Caldwell and Adam McNeela, were heartbroken by the loss. McNeela said to AZFamily, “He shot Chip in his leg, in the joint first and Chip went down. He was flailing in the grass and I started screaming. He took a couple steps forward and fired into his head.” The couple, along with many in the community, have since questioned the necessity of the man's actions, pointing out that the park was crowded with families and other park-goers at the time of the shooting.
The police have not filed charges against the shooter, stating that the investigation's initial findings were consistent with his claim of self-defense. However, the case could be reopened if new information surfaces, officials say. Meanwhile, Caldwell and McNeela are mourning their pets, Chip and Theo. Caldwell lamented the loss, telling AZFamily, “He was the most innocent boy, he was scared of his own shadow. He would never hurt anyone. He was scared of everything.”
As the community deals with the aftermath, McNeela and Caldwell are urging that the shooter be held responsible for what they believe was an unjust act. “There wasn’t an ounce of threat to that man and his wife or his dog. It is so sad if he gets away without a single charge,” McNeela said in a statement obtained by AZFamily. Residents have reportedly been leaving flowers at the park and expressing safety concern. Police are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
