In a tense standoff in Plymouth, quick-thinking police officers averted potential tragedy by successfully defusing a "suicide by cop" situation. The incident began when a woman, later identified as the caller herself, made a 911 call describing someone in the yard armed with a knife and intent on killing her. Officer Michael Curley, first on the scene, found the woman in the driveway holding the weapon. She charged at Curley with the knife extended, prompting the officer to retreat in his cruiser, as reported by the Plymouth Police Department.
Curley, while being backed up against a busy roadway, continued his attempts at dialogue. The woman, halting her pursuit, asked the officer to shoot her. Backing down the rural dirt road Curley was, even as she approached him with the weapon in hand. When Officer Torrance arrived, the woman stopped her advance and was urged to put down the knife. Ignoring pleas to de-escalate, she demanded to be shot, ignoring Officer Torrance's attempts to resolve the situation non-lethally.
The confrontation came to a head when the woman charged at Officer Torrance, who was able to subdue her with his Taser. Following a brief scuffle, police apprehended the woman, and she was taken into custody. Officers on the scene are credited with handling an extremely volatile situation with professionalism and restraint. In the aftermath, the woman received medical attention from Plymouth EMS and was transported to BID Plymouth for a mandatory mental health evaluation, according to the Plymouth Police Department.
The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of police work, where officers like Torrance and Curley must be prepared to navigate complex, and potentially dangerous, encounters daily. The police department has commended Officers Torrance, Curley, Ford, Souza, and Clinician Ruggiero for their exemplary performance.
