President Joe Biden is set to shape the judiciary with his forty-seventh round of judicial nominees, the White House announced on Monday. In a move continuing his commitment to diversity, he has tapped a mix of backgrounds to fill positions on federal circuit and district courts, as well as in the District of Columbia Superior Court. Biden's selections aim to mirror the country's wide array of personal and professional experiences.

Among the nominees is Kevin G. Ritz for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Currently serving as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee since 2022, Ritz boasts a lengthy career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and several leadership roles within legal organizations. Highlighting their qualifications, the White House statement notes his clerkship for Judge Julia Smith Gibbons on the same circuit he is now set to judge.

For the district courts, the nominees include lawyers and judges from across a the nation. Brian E. Murphy is a nominee for the District of Massachusetts, with experience at both private practice and as a public defender. The Eastern District of Washington may soon see Judge Rebecca L. Pennell, currently serving on the Washington Court of Appeals, on their bench. Detra Shaw-Wilder, chosen for the Southern District of Florida, has been a partner at her firm since 1994. Jeannette Vargas is slated for the Southern District of New York, bringing her extensive experience from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for that district.

The District of Columbia Superior Court could soon welcome Judge Rahkel Bouchet and John Cuong Truong as new judges. Bouchet, who has been a Magistrate Judge since 2016, holds experience as both a practitioner and a clinician, while Truong comes from a Deputy Chief position in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Biden’s selection extends beyond judges, with the nomination of Bobby Jack Woods as a U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Woods, a former Sheriff of Boyd County and veteran of the Kentucky State Police, embodies seasoned law enforcement expertise and commitment to justice, ready to uphold the rule of law. With 229 federal judicial nominees and 28 U.S. Marshals announced under his administration, Biden continues to imprint his legacy on the federal judiciary and law enforcement landscape.
