President Joe Biden is set to host Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’a Al-Sudani from Iraq at the White House on April 15, signaling ongoing US commitment to stability and development in the region. According to a statement made by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the meeting aims to reinforce the strong bilateral relations and continue to deeply engage on common priorities.
The leaders are also expected to steadfastly reaffirm their commitment to the Strategic Framework Agreement, and will look to further develop their shared vision for a secure and prosperous Iraq, which is sovereign and more integrated with its regional neighbors. The White House press release details the talks will include shared efforts to continue to fully defeat ISIS and to carefully consider the evolution of the military mission in Iraq, a topic of interest nearly ten years after the Global Coalition against the terror group was formed.
Alongside security concerns, the US and Iraq will be looking into Iraqi financial reforms to encourage economic development within the country. This comes as part of wider discussions on how best to assist Iraq in achieving its goals for energy independence and modernization, crucial components for the nation’s future growth and stability.
Biden and Al-Sudani's meeting is also poised to touch on a wide array of issues, as both nations look forward to maintaining a strong partnership. With Iraq's strategic importance in the Middle East, these bilateral discussions seem set to significantly impact the regional status quo and the ongoing international efforts to maintain peace and promote development.
