A coyote has been shot and killed in Montgomery County, Maryland, after it attacked two women in separate incidents on Thursday, according to officials. The animal tested positive for rabies, prompting health warnings and a search for those who may have had contact with the coyote. Montgomery County police report the first attack occurred near the intersection of Patuxent Drive and Lost Creek Drive in Ashton, while the second took place on Bell Road in Burtonsville.

The first victim, attacked while walking her dog, required hospitalization, and the second managed to fend off and stab the rabid coyote during the assault, WTOP reported. Police later located the coyote along a trail on Dustin Road, where it was euthanized.

WUSA9 warns local residents that rabies, if left untreated, is fatal in humans. Local officials urge anyone who had contact with the coyote to seek medical advice and have their pets checked if they suspect any interaction occurred with the rabid animal.

Coyote attacks on humans are very rare, with experts pointing out that these animals typically avoid human contact. During mating season, however, coyotes are more active and can be protective of dens with pups, explained a specialist. After being stabbed by the second victim, the coyote was identified by its injuries and removed by authorities. Anyone who may have had contact with the rabid animal should seek medical attention, as recommended by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services, NBC Washington reported.
