It might sound like a scene from a slapstick comedy, but for Devauntae Lee Scroggins, it was all too real - and now he's back behind bars. Scroggins, age 28, shot himself in the hand this past Monday and was discovered to be a felon in unlawful possession of both a firearm and ammunition. The incident occurred in Rancho Cucamonga, in an apartment on Vineyard Avenue where deputies responded to a call about gunfire and loud yelling.
Upon deputies' arrival, they found Scroggins bleeding and in need of medical attention. A search of his residence uncovered a handgun amid the bloody aftermath of the self-inflicted wound. The report states Scroggins is no stranger to law enforcement, racking up a rap sheet for setting a vehicle on fire and assaulting a deputy sheriff in February of this year, according to a press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
Scroggins had been out on felony probation stemming from the aforementioned incident when he decided to add to his trouble with this latest stunt. His recent past also includes a January sentence of 28 days in county jail for assaulting a police officer. Post-treatment for his hand, Scroggins was booked into the West Valley Detention Center with bail set at $30,000. He faces charges which include willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The case took a more serious turn when he was slapped with an additional no-bail hold for probation violation. Scroggins is due back in court on March 14, according to Sherthe iff-Coroner Department's press release. Meanwhile, the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department commends the community on their vigilance and encourages anyone with further information to come forward.
