A rockslide has forced the closure of a segment of the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, with large boulders obstructing the thoroughfare and prompting a closure in both directions near Big Rock Drive late Sunday night. The coastal route became a bed of debris, as California Highway Patrol reported the incident occurring around 11:30 p.m., according to CBS Los Angeles.
Crews labored through the dark hours to clear the obstruction, managing to reopen one lane by approximately 9 a.m. on Monday, still leaving uncertainty hanging over when the full road would be cleared. Advancing on the tales of disruption, another rockslide was reported over the weekend on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, noted NBC Los Angeles, demonstrating the instability of the area following recent rainstorms that have left hillsides saturated and precarious.
In response to the overnight rockslide, traffic directions were muddled as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department patrol unit directed drivers, as captured in the stark morning hours, "I need you guys to make a U-turn and go back the other way. PCH is closed. It is not going to be open for walking or driving," mirroring the reality that for many the road had turned from artery to impasse, as KTLA reported.
