Tragedy struck a San Antonio neighborhood when a devastating fire claimed the lives of four individuals inside their southeast side home. San Antonio Fire Department officials found the bodies after extinguishing an inferno that completely ravaged a residential structure on Friday morning. "It’s a very dark day for the fire department here," Joe Arrington, a spokesperson for the SAFD, told KSAT in a somber briefing.
The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. in the 4400 block of Wrangler Run. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the home already consumed by flames, with efforts initially focused on preventing the spread to neighboring properties. The names of the deceased were not released, but the fire department spokesperson said they believe the victims to be a family that resided there. A nearby SAFD station is located just over a mile away, but by the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully involved according to an interview given by Arrington.
The aftermath of the blaze left the residence utterly collapsed and was termed "a total loss" by SAFD. Neighboring homes also sustained some damage due to the extensive fire. An investigation into the cause of the fire as well as the cause of death for the victims is underway, with Arrington emphasizing that it's too early for speculation. He mentioned in statements to AP News, "The cause of the fire as well as the cause of death will be under investigation."
Residents of the community were shaken by the event, with Michael Lara, who lives next door, recalling for KSAT how an explosive sound, resembling a shockwave, jolted him awake. Lara witnessed an all-consuming fire and despite attempts to intervene, was forced back by the heat. His father, Benito, shared the harrowing experience of trying to rescue their neighbors, only to face the collapsing door and an intense blaze. Both Laras had believed that only the father was in town at the time of the fire, with the mother and teenagers thought to be in El Paso. However, their inability to contact the family coupled with the presence of the mother and daughter's cars outside the charred remains of the home compounded the dread felt by the community.
