Blaze Torches Abandoned Structure, San Antonio Fire Department Steps in to Douse Flames
Early risers on the southwest side of San Antonio were greeted by the sight of smoke and fire Wednesday morning as an abandoned home went up in flames. According to KENS 5, the San Antonio Fire Department quickly responded to a call around 7:30 a.m. regarding a fire on the 300 block of Hawthorne Street, close to I-35 South. Upon their rapid arrival, firefighters discovered the home already surrendering to a relentless conflagration.
No residents needed to be evacuated, as the property had been left to the elements, a specter of abandonment amongst a community tethered by the desire to rapidly extinguish not only the fire but the looming threat it posed to nearby homes. The blaze was successfully smothered within fifteen minutes, an aggressive bout against time and the dangers of potential spread.
Although the house subjected to the inferno was devoid of life, surrounding structures weren't as fortunate, sustaining some fire damage. "A demolition crew will be tearing down what is left of the home later on Wednesday," as firefighters ensured that nearby families remained safe from harm’s way. There have been no reported injuries associated to the incident, and an investigation is set to commence to unearth the cause of the fire.
The community now watches, as the remnants of what was once someone's home, and perhaps a repository of hopes and dreams, is to be summarily dismantled. The aftermath of such events invariably leaves behind questions, ponderings on what may have been done to preemptively avert disaster. As details emerge, the San Antonio Fire Department continues to emphasize citizen safety and the importance of maintaining vigilance over unoccupied properties that may pose similar risks in the future.
