In a push for enhanced urban walkability, Pearl's real estate development arm is taking concrete steps to bridge the gap—literally. Two new pedestrian bridges are set to rise above the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River Walk, aiming to stitch together the vibrant amenities and residential options on each side of the river.

The San Antonio River Authority has greenlit the initiative, with the city's Historic and Design Review Commission poised to review the design plans on April 3, as reported by the San Antonio Report. Construction is due to start within the year, facilitating access between the hotel, dining spots, apartments on the east, and Oxbow’s burgeoning projects on the west.

Clarifying the project's scope, Bill Shown, CEO of Oxbow, elucidated, "Several years ago, we declared that Pearl would be the center of the city with a river running through it. If this is truly the center of a neighborhood, then there’s got to be tons of connectivity, and we’re missing connectivity in … so many ways," as noted by the San Antonio Report. The first of the bridges, showcasing a box truss design with western red cedar decking, will connect 1210 E. Elmira St. and Brewmeister’s Alley.

This bridge at Elmira Street will lead directly to a new hotel plotting to provide a more economical stay compared to the opulent Emma Hotel. Shown shared that construction of the 166-room hotel is expected to begin at end of 2024 or in early 2025. Moreover, another pedestrian bridge will link the soon-to-be-opened Coopers Row apartments with the Pearl's Pullman Market area, boasting a farm-to-market grocery and a smorgasbord of eateries—a strategic move to fuse both sides of the community, reported in a different capacity by the San Antonio Report.

Each structure not only caters to pedestrian traffic but also spotlights Oxbow's commitment to a more interconnected urban experience, mirroring the broader trend of city walkability initiatives. With these bridges, Pearl is shaping up to achieve its vision of becoming a robust, accessible neighborhood hub, centered on the River Walk.
