A major win for energy efficiency in San Antonio as the CPS Energy Casa Verde Home Weatherization Program lands a $1 million federal grant. This boost, courtesy of Congressman Joaquin Castro, is set to extend energy-saving upgrades to roughly 500 low-income homes in the city. These upgrades include enhancing attic and wall insulation and air-sealing measures, aiming to trim down energy bills and ramp up efficiency, according to FOX San Antonio.

Congressman Joaquin Castro, who heralded the funding surge for the program said, "The CPS Energy Casa Verde Weatherization Program is a great example of how smart infrastructure investments can protect the environment and uplift San Antonio families.” However, there remains a backdrop of many residents being shut out of the current program due to prerequisite home repairs exceeding its scope, specifically issues related to plumbing, electrical, and structural concerns.

On the other side, Electric Energy Online details the distribution of this grant, which falls under the scope of FIFA’s Fiscal Year 2024 federal appropriations, in the larger picture of Castro’s efforts that netted $10.6 million supporting 13 community projects in San Antonio. President and CEO of CPS Energy, Rudy D. Garza expressed his gratitude: "This program has changed the lives of many CPS Energy customers, especially during our extremely hot summers and during the coldest days in winter." This grant will bring additional homes up to qualifying standards for weatherization, broadening the program's reach.

The Casa Verde program, part of CPS Energy’s larger Sustainable Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP), supports residents by providing home energy assessments and efficiency improvements at no cost. Additionally, it paves the way for savings; the program offers an average of $4,500 in improvements, translating to annual energy cost reductions of about $450. Furthermore, CPS Energy’s STEP has set ambitious targets like a 410 MW energy demand reduction and substantial feedback for the grid, especially in critical periods.

For San Antonio residents looking to shore up their homes against the duress of extreme weather while curtailing energy spending, the Casa Verde program offers a salient opportunity. Interested customers can apply at the CPS Energy website or by reaching out directly. With the substantial infusion of federal dollars and broad community support, CPS Energy continues to lay the groundwork for a more sustainable and affordable energy future in one of the nation’s largest cities.
