San Diego is reeling after a chaotic incident led to the in-custody death of a Black man, prompting officials to launch a comprehensive inquiry into the series of events that unfolded late Saturday night. The man, since identified as Abdul Kamara, is at the center of multi-agency investigations following his death mere hours after being detained by local law enforcement.
The events began when Carlsbad Police responded to a call for an ambulance on March 2, at around 9:11 PM at a restaurant on Carlsbad Village Drive, the male in question was later transported to Scripps Encinitas hospital, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department's release. Kamara however left the hospital prior to examination, prompting a subsequent radio call leading San Diego Sheriffs to encounter him once again, this time crawling shirtless and shoeless around a parking lot on Birmingham Drive, Cardiff Hoodline reported.
Upon his arrest for apparent drug influence, 29-year-old Kamara reportedly began harming himself in the patrol car and was later restrained using a WRAP device after kicking and flailing against deputies, as detailed by the San Diego Police Department. After medics were called, Kamara experienced a medical emergency, which led to his passing at a local hospital at approximately 4:00 AM.
The ensuing investigation into Kamara's death is extensive, with multiple law enforcement entities involved, all while the man's cause of death remains under scrutiny by the San Diego County Medical Examiner, per Hoodline's findings. The San Diego Police Homicide Unit will be conducting the primary investigation, with additional oversight supplied by the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB), amongst others, including the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office, closely monitoring the progress of the investigation.
The San Diego Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with pertinent information to step forward, providing contact details for the Homicide Unit and Crime Stoppers. Meanwhile, the deputies involved in Kamara's detainment, who are named as Deputy Alejandro Aguilera, Deputy Tyler Phillips, Corporal Christopher Aberle, Deputy Carlos Heard, Deputy Travis Kaapke, and Deputy Derrick Jones, remain on active duty during the ongoing multi-faceted inquiry into what transformed an initial call for medical assistance into a tragic and fatal confrontation.
