A brazen car thief sparked a frantic search in Spring Valley Monday after he made off with a minivan with a toddler strapped in the back seat – setting off an intensive hunt that ended with the child found safe but the suspect still at large, deputies said. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office reported that the heist took place just before 6 p.m. in the 500 block of Sweetwater Road, when a father's worst nightmare unfolded as his vehicle, along with his 2-year-old daughter, was snatched away. The harried search came to a close when the vehicle was discovered abandoned at the corner of Jamacha Road and Sweetwater Road, with the girl unscathed and quickly returned to her distraught parents.
According to FOX5 San Diego, witnesses near the scene described seeing a man in a white shirt sprinting away from the recovered vehicle. Although deputies gave chase, the suspect managed to evade capture, and his whereabouts remain unknown. As the sheriff’s deputies continue to cast a wide net for the perpetrator, the incident has been escalated to being investigated as both a kidnapping and an auto theft, with local law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward – a potential reward of up to $1,000 is on the table for tips leading to an arrest.
Witnesses last saw the suspect as a bald Black man donning a white shirt, as detailed by KGTV, and authorities are imploring the public to help ensure he is caught before he can strike again. Sheriff's officials have made their plea for justice clear: anyone with information should not hesitate to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477, where anonymity can be secured, and the community's safety can be upheld by ensuring such a reckless individual is apprehended.
