In a disturbing incident on a tranquil San Leandro street, a lone gunman opened fire, wounding a 4-year-old child. San Leandro Police made swift work of the case, snatching up 33-year-old Adam Johnson, who they accuse of unleashing a hail of bullets in a quiet neighborhood. According to an official statement by the San Leandro Police Department, the terrifying scene unfolded on West Juana Avenue on the afternoon of February 28 leading to the arrest of Johnson the following day.
The authorities were quick to respond to the shooting report, where they found the young boy with a gunshot wound to his leg. The injured child was treated on the scene by police and then rushed to the hospital by ambulance, thankfully sustaining no life-threatening injuries. Police revealed that Johnson had reportedly come onto the scene to purportedly retrieve a vehicle he claimed was stolen before deciding to fire off shots into the duplex quickly.
The house that was Johnson’s apparent target was part of a multi-unit residential building. Although the intended victim inside that house was unharmed, a stray bullet managed to find its way into an adjacent unit, striking the innocent child. Detectives indicated that Johnson intended to target that specific residence, but they have not publicly detailed the motive or connection between Johnson and the property.
Eyeing the violent crime with high-tech tools, detectives pieced together surveillance footage and used Flock Public Safety Cameras to track down Johnson. "Detectives were able to identify the shooter as Adam Johnson," the San Leandro Police described, leading them to bring Johnson into custody without incident on February 29 safely. Johnson now faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted homicide, with additional charges for firearm use and causing great bodily harm.
The Alameda County District Attorney's office swiftly charged him, aiming to ensure that justice was not only sought but secured. In the meantime, San Leandro Police continue to seek information and have asked anyone with details about the incident to come forward.
