Seattle's waterfront has gotten a facelift with the completion of the Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge, shining a new light on the connection from downtown to the Colman Dock Ferry Terminal. Announced by the City of Seattle, the official opening of the bridge took place back in November 2023, but the final touches were just recently wrapped up, according to the SDOT Blog.
Commuters and tourists alike are set to fully enjoy the improved safety and aesthetic features of the bridge, which is now adorned with over 275 handrail lights to brighten up their journey. Although the bridge was functional since its inaugural reveal, it continued to undergo enhancements to replace temporary railings and lighting. The lighting solutions not to only brighten the pathway but also highlight the unique V-shaped columns supporting the structure.
More than just a passage, the Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge stands as a nod to its predecessor – one that witnessed the tread of workers' boots over the railroad tracks in the early 1900s. Tapping into its rich pedigree, the new bridge claims its rightful place in the bustling scene of the Pacific Northwest; it has historically served around 5 million pedestrians annually.
Aside from the allure of the lights, the modern bridge offers a wider path which tends to graciously accommodate the heavy foot and wheel traffic it endures. The City of Seattle projects that the bridge will continue as one of the region's busiest, with visitors and commuters revelling in an experience that promises to be unobstructed for many years ahead.
