Chaos erupted at Six Flags Over Georgia on its opening day, ending in a 15-year-old boy in critical condition after being shot by a police officer. Atlanta News First reports that on Saturday at around 6:15 p.m., Cobb County police were called to assist park security in controlling a sizable, unruly crowd. The disturbances involved some 500-600 guests who were fighting and running through the park.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the violence quickly spilled outside, where suspects began to openly fire shots at officers. One officer was then forced to quickly respond by returning fire, striking the adolescent. FOX 5 Atlanta revealed that the GBI has found a handgun near where the boy was shot. He is now being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital and remains in critical condition. Video footage from the incident shows teens violently kicking a person on the ground and shots heard in the background causing widespread panic.
The aftermath of the shooting saw one unmarked patrol vehicle damaged, although no officers sustained injuries. The GBI is carrying out an independent investigation into the shooting, with the findings set to be delivered to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office once concluded. Meanwhile, Six Flags Over Georgia has reiterated their commitment to safety, stating in a released statement that their goal is "to provide safe, fun entertainment." They emphasized their security systems and metal detection protocols and conveyed their disappointment at such incidents disrupting community events.
A park worker, who wished to remain anonymous, shared her concerns with Atlanta News First, saying she saw people running and did not instantly realize the gravity of the situation. She emphasized the need for stricter supervision within the park: "I believe they should not be left unattended or unsupervised by their parents... Maybe they need more real officers here so they could sort of kind of pump some kind of fear into those types of people," she stated.
Incidents from the previous year paint a similar picture, with reports of a large group of teens having to be removed from the park after fights broke out. In the wake of the violence, local drivers were advised to avoid the area while police secured the scene. Both Six Flags and the police department expressed their determination to prevent such troubles from spilling into public spaces and maintain security for all visitors.
