Chaos erupted in the quiet streets of unincorporated Sonoma County early Monday, when a suspected gunman engaged in a deadly confrontation with law enforcement, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD). It was just past midnight when Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call about a man reportedly brandishing a firearm near Stony Point Road and Todd Road.
Within moments of locating a white 4-door sedan matching the description in the area, a deputy signaled "shots fired" over the radio. Officials have yet to confirm whether it was the suspect, the deputy, or both who initially discharged their weapons. The suspect, described only as an adult male, allegedly fled prompting a vehicle pursuit that ended with gunfire and his death, the SRPD detailed in a public statement.
The chase culminated when the suspect's vehicle crashed into a fence in the 3200 block of Stony Point Road, where a subsequent exchange of gunfire took place. SRPD detectives are examining if shots were also fired prior to the pursuit's end. At the crash site, emergency aid was administered by deputies and SRPD officers to the suspect, who was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene, and to several injured deputies.
Four deputies sustained injuries in the incident with one deputy suffering a leg injury, two deputies with hand injuries, and the fourth faced a significant head injury, now in critical condition, law enforcement officials stated. The nature of their injuries is still under investigation, and as of now, specifics cannot be shared. The deceased's name is being withheld, pending family notification with an autopsy to be scheduled later this week according to the SRPD release.
Invoking the Sonoma County Law Enforcement Employee-involved Critical Incident Protocol, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office requested that the SRPD and the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office conduct an independent investigation into the harrowing events. The SRPD’s Violent Crime Team is heading the probe, with Field & Evidence Technicians analyzing the crime scenes. Further updates on this ongoing investigation are expected as new information surfaces.
