A 15-year-old South Cobb High School student was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle on his way to school early Wednesday morning, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. The incident occurred near the intersection of Austell Road and Clay Road, and Cobb County police quickly responded to the scene after the collision was reported shortly before 9 a.m.

According to details provided by 11Alive, a gray 2021 Kia Rio driven by a 22-year-old man was traveling east on Clay Road; it passed through the intersection with a green light and upon reaching the eastern side of the road, struck the teen who had stepped onto the roadway, the student was then rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.

The student's identity has not been disclosed by authorities, but the Cobb County School District confirmed that the victim was enrolled at South Cobb High School. "This morning, a student was hit by a vehicle after stepping in the road on the way to school. We appreciate the quick response of Cobb County Police. Our thoughts are with the student," a district spokesperson said, in a statement obtained by FOX 5.

The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is spearheading the investigation, which is ongoing it is not clear as of yet if the driver of the vehicle will face any charges in connection to the incident, however, the police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the STEP Unit at (770) 499-3987, as mentioned by 11Alive.
