A Safeway supermarket in Los Gatos became the site of a brazen robbery early this morning, where an individual was arrested for shoplifting and assault with pepper spray. According to the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department, the employees alerted authorities after the suspect attempted to leave the store with unpaid goods.
In an attempt to evade capture, the thief sprayed the Safeway workers with pepper spray. However, the local officers were quick on the scene, tracking down the perpetrator who still possessed the stolen goods and the weapon inside of his backpack. In a post by the police department's Facebook page, authorities detailed the rapid response that led to the suspect's arrest stating he "used pepper spray to threaten employees to prevent them from intervening."
The taken into custody individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, is facing charges of robbery and being a felon in possession of pepper spray. The arrest was performed by one of the department's field trainees, Officer Martin, marking a swift act of justice by one of the force's newest members. Following the altercation, The suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
