A month-long manhunt came to an end with the arrest of a 24-year-old man in connection to a February homicide in Washington, D.C., authorities said. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that Kyree Hairston of Southeast, D.C., was collared Thursday by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Hairston was hit with charges for the Second-Degree Murder while Armed, of 51-year-old David Coe, who was found fatally shot over a month ago. According to MPD officials, officers responded to the 1200 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast, after a shooting was reported on the afternoon of February 4th
Upon their arrival at the scene around 2:46 p.m., officers discovered Coe suffering from a gunshot wound — he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed, and it was not immediately clear if Hairston had a lawyer to comment on his behalf. The arrest comes after a warrant was issued by the DC Superior Court.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the community was left grappling with the reality of violent loss, a tableau not uncommon in pockets of the city reeling from gun violence. The capture of Hairston has brought a semblance of closure to the case, though the streets remain pensive, wary of the next tragedy. Further details about the case, including Hairston's next court appearance, have not yet been released by authorities.
