Police have arrested a suspect in the double slaying that rocked a San Diego neighborhood last week, officials said. In a grisly scene that emerged from an apparent poolside altercation, 31-year-old Joseph Taylor and 24-year-old Lavion Estridge were fatally shot in the 4500 block of Alvarado Canyon Road on March 1, the City of San Diego's official website reported. The victims, both of whom were Black males, were discovered in an apartment complex stairwell suffering from gunshot wounds and later died of their injuries.
While initial authorities were on the hunt for one or two shooters described as black males wearing red hoodies and black or red pants, but Charles Burke, a 31-year-old Black male, was apprehended on March 5, caught at a gas station in the 11800 block of Rancho Bernardo Road according to San Diego government officials, he was taken into custody without incident and is now facing murder charges, the first suspect, of perhaps multiple, to be taken off the streets. Estridge, the younger victim, was reported to be working as a security guard at the complex though Taylor did not live there, the shooting, which unfolded amidst a group of individuals near a pool area is believed to be gang-related, and the actual motives remain under intense investigation.
The San Diego Police Department, still dealing with the case's aftermath, has not closed the book on the case—an active and ongoing investigation by Homicide Detectives gesture toward multiple complexities yet uncovered, said the city's official communication. Despite crucial efforts inclusive of an aerial search by police helicopter suspects remained elusive directly after the shootings with a group briefly detained then released shortly after the occurrence "efforts which included deploying a police helicopter," but now at least one man stands accused.
