Barely a week after a hail of gunfire disrupted a typically mundane Philadelphia bus stop, U.S. Marshals clapped cuffs on 18-year-old Ahnile Buggs, the alleged triggerman behind the harrowing incident that left eight young victims wounded. The arrest followed days of intense manhunt by the U.S. Marshals Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force in conjunction with the local Philadelphia Police Shooting Investigative Unit (SIG), as detailed in a press release by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Early morning on March 9, in a calculated sweep, law enforcement descended upon a west Philadelphia neighborhood where Buggs was believed to be holed up and by 8 a.m., he was in handcuffs; the raid included a posse of 25 investigators who zeroed in on Buggs' hideout—a residence on the 900 block of North 42nd Street. The raid was swift, Buggs was found on the third floor of the home, arrested without a skirmish and the SIG unit members discovered a firearm alongside an extended magazine during the search which might well have been the instrument of the assault, further aggrandizing the weight of the charges against him.
Buggs now faces a slew of charges, among them attempted murder and firearms violations, following the bus stop attack on Rising Sun Avenue that shook the community on March 6. The fugitive task force's collaboration with local enforcement is part of a larger, concerted effort to rein in the surge of gun violence plaguing the streets of Philadelphia, with U.S. Marshal Eric Gartner affirming their commitment, "The arrest of Ahnile Buggs is another example of the Marshals Service’s unwavering commitment to Commissioner Kevin Bethel and the Philadelphia Police Department in our relentless pursuit of all who purposefully and violently do harm to our communities," as he remarked in the official statement.
