The San Diego Police Department is currently investigating a series of brazen break-ins rocking the Mira Mesa community. Residents are on high alert after eight related burglaries have been reported since March 4th. Suspects, believed to be a group of males in their late teens or early twenties, are targeting houses on the block's edge, the authorities report.
Investigators have seen a disturbing pattern emerge: assailants break into homes through rear sliding glass doors, often smashing the glass or taking advantage of doors left unattended. Once inside, they ransack the properties and nab valuables such as safes, cash, and jewelry. In some cases, the burglars have been brazen enough to haul away entire safes. A video released by the SDPD shows the perpetrators, in one such instance, struggling with a large safe before loading it into an SUV, suspected to be a dark-colored, late-model, small-sized vehicle.
A photograph, believed by the authorities to show one of the suspects involved in the thefts, is also making the rounds as the San Diego police request the public's assistance. Community members are urged to immediately contact the police if they spot a vehicle matching the suspects' or witness suspicious activities. Lt. David Bautista of the San Diego Police Department is the main point of contact for tips from the public, who may reach him either through email at [email protected] or by contacting Crime Stoppers anonymously at (888) 580-8477. The SDPD is banking on community vigilance to help crack this case wide open.
The rash of burglaries has jarred the Mira Mesa neighborhood, with its tranquil rows of homes now marred by a creeping sense of vulnerability. The police are reinforcing their appeal to homeowners to secure their sliding doors and report anything unusual.
