Two men have been apprehended by Kent Police following a disturbing incident in which a woman was repeatedly stabbed and subjected to racist invectives. According to a report from MyNorthwest, the attack occurred on Central Avenue South around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. The police were called to the scene after the victim, fearing for her safety, managed to contact 911 despite the assailants fleeing the area post-assault.

Further details obtained by KING 5 reveal that the assault started on a King County Metro Bus, where the alleged perpetrator began to aggressively verbally assault the woman with racist slurs and even spit at her. The victim tried to seek help from the bus driver, who was then requested to alert the authorities. Harrowingly, the suspect supposedly followed her to the front, grabbed her, and forcibly dragged her off the bus before assaulting and stabbing her multiple times.

The Kent Police Department reported that while the male suspect's companion did not partake in the physical aggression, he was taken into custody for obstruction. Meanwhile, the primary suspect, accused of the stabbing and racist abuse, faced his first court appearance in King County, with the bail set at a quarter of a million dollars. "The allegations here are very concerning," Casey McNerthney, a King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office representative, told KING 5. "And when you see allegations like this, you can expect prosecutors to ask for a high bail."

Fortunately, the woman's jacket seemingly offered some degree of protection against the stabbing. Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla sternly addressed the incident, "Hate crimes will not be tolerated. If you commit a hate crime in our city, KPD will be relentless in our pursuit of bringing you to justice,” he said in a statement obtained by KIRO 7. However, while this incident shines a spotlight on the issue, it's disclosed that hate crimes, although reportedly on the decline based on recent data, are unfortunately more common than many might perceive. "We'd like to say that this is a rare occurrence, but we actually see this happen way more often than people realize, and we know that hate crimes are also underreported," McNerthney also added.
