Three suspects from the Oakland area have been detained after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a store in Santa Rosa, and being associated with another heist in Sunnyvale worth between $75,000 to $100,000, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said. The suspects' vehicle was located by an H1 helicopter and intercepted by deputies as it barreled down Hwy 101, leading officers on a high-speed chase, according to the Sonoma Sheriff's Office.
During their frantic escapade, the suspects' vehicle reached speeds over 100 mph, zigzagging through lanes and even using the shoulder of the road, the Sheriff's Office reported. In their attempt to flee, the suspects collided with another car, injuring the driver. Following the crash, deputies were able to detain the trio with assistance from the Santa Rosa Police Department and California Highway Patrol.
Footage captured by the Sonoma Sheriff's helicopter documenting the pulse-pounding pursuit and apprehension of the alleged thieves was later shared online. The video, which was also posted by Henry K. Lee on X, highlights the gravity of the situation as law enforcement navigated the dangers of the high-speed chase on Hwy 101 to bring the suspects into custody.
The injured driver, caught up in the chaos, was rushed to help by first responders as the scene unfolded. Details surrounding the extent of the driver's injuries have not been released. Meanwhile, according to Henry K. Lee, the Sonoma Sheriff helicopter and ground deputies worked in concert to put an end to the dangerous flight of the suspects, who had initially targeted a DICK's Sporting Goods store.
Law enforcement has not yet revealed the identities of the suspects or the specific charges they will face. As the investigation continues, authorities are sorting through the details of the events that led to this dramatic chase and the subsequent arrest of the individuals involved.
