A Gwinnett County man’s alleged domestic violence rampage ended in a harrowing police chase and multiple collisions. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Lance Brandley Nelson, 47, of Suwanee, now faces a slew of charges, including kidnapping, false imprisonment, firearm possession during certain crimes, and aggravated assault, stemming from a March 7 incident. Nelson assaulted his wife, held her at gunpoint for two days, and then evaded capture in a grey Mercedes SUV after she fled to a neighbor's house for help.
When officers attempted to halt his flight, Nelson reportedly tore through the streets in the vehicle, which later sustained damage and lost a tire during the frenetic escape. He then crashed into two police cars and other vehicles, eventually leading to his apprehension on foot. As pertained to the chase, officials described the dramatic scene in a video captured by the Gwinnett police helicopter showing the tireless SUV spinning out of control and coming to rest only after causing further destruction on Sugarloaf Parkway, near Duluth's Gas South Arena.
In a hair-raising sequence of events detailed by WSB-TV, Nelson tried to gain access to a parking deck at the Gas South Arena but found it closed; this was prior to his subsequent collisions. It was after his vehicle crashed into a pickup truck and passenger car that Nelson tried to make a break for it on foot. Video footage shows him crawling out of the passenger side and sprinting toward the Holiday Inn parking lot, where officers were able to confront and arrest him.
Nelson's run from the law concluded with only minor injuries to himself, confirmed by police. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported for the drivers of the other vehicles involved in Nelson's path of destruction. Intending to bring Nelson to justice, authorities have indicated that he will be booked into Gwinnett County Jail following his release from the hospital. In addition to the charges already mentioned, Nelson is also accused of family violence battery, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, and obstruction.
