Chaos erupted in the early hours last Thursday when an altercation in a Whataburger parking lot led to gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has charged 38-year-old Lucas Williams with two counts of aggravated assault after the Thomasville incident. GBI's report confirms that the suspect, who is associated with the local sheriff's office SWAT team as a medic, was involved in a heated exchange that turned violent around 4:25 a.m.
The trouble started when Williams, who had been waiting for someone, engaged in a dispute with another customer in the drive-thru line. According to the GBI, Williams, while not on active SWAT duty, stepped out armed with a pistol and approached the other driver. The latter, carrying a rifle, retreated to the back of the lot, subsequently heading to a neighboring business and across Highway 19. It was there, running away, Williams purportedly unleashed multiple shots at the man. Remarkably, the man, who at no point returned fire, dodged injury, as did any bystanders.
Not a bullet but the situation found its mark – one of the pistol rounds went astray, striking a gas pump at the Raceway gas station opposite the Whataburger. The GBI disclosed the round's recovery in their ongoing investigation into the incident. As a result of the violent confrontation, Williams wound up behind bars at the Thomas County Jail.
The District Attorney's Office in Thomasville will handle the subsequent prosecution once the GBI's case file is complete. In the meantime, the agency encourages anyone with relevant information to step forward.
