The scourge of gun violence in American cities is finding a new accelerant in the form of "auto sears," also known colloquially as "switches," which are being blamed for a recent uptick in shootings with multiple victims. These devices are simple yet lethal: they transform semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons, thus increasing the potential for extensive casualties, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara.
Auto sears or “switches” have fueled an increase in multiple victim shootings across the US. Thankful to MPD & law enforcement partners, especially US Attorney & @ATFHQ for their help prosecuting those who sell & use these devices to to cause harm. https://t.co/als94YMCPe

Recent enforcement efforts spearheaded by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and assorted law enforcement partners, including the US Attorney and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have highlighted the threat posed by these illegal modifications, law enforcement's ongoing battle to contain them is intensifying as they work to prosecute not only individuals who possess and utilize these devastating devices but also those who traffic them—we're thankful for the enduring support in this cause, says the MPD Chief in a Twitter statement, effectively spotlighting the collaborative nature of these initiatives, as per the Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara.
