The Lone Star State continues to blaze trails in population growth, far outpacing its national counterparts. With a massive increase of close to half a million residents, Texas has emerged as 2023's heavyweight champ in the population growth arena. Citing freshly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau, reports indicate that from July 2022 to July 2023, Texas' headcount rose by approximately 475,000 souls, with particular counties experiencing a boom akin to a modern-day Gold Rush.
In a stark display of demographic dynamism, no less than 177 out of Texas' 254 counties saw their populations swell over a year. It's Kaufman County, however, that steals the spotlight, leading not just the state, but the entire nation with a staggering growth rate of 7.5%. According to KXAN, Rockwall, Liberty, Blanco, and Chambers counties also climbed the charts, each marking an increase of 5% or more, launching themselves into the top ten fastest-growing counties in the United States. In more subdued news, King County sagged with the largest population dip, tumbling by 7.3%.
While most larger counties are fattening up mainly due to a surge in inward migration, some, like Dallas, El Paso, and Travis, have borne witness to the peculiar phenomenon of population expansion through the metric of births alone, despite suffering a net loss in migration. As a notable instance, Fort Bend County's 80.7% surge is primarily credited to an inflow of newcomers. In a contrasting choreography of county kinetics, Caldwell County has seen a mind-boggling 91% of its population growth from outside transfers, as shared on the KXAN platform.
Amidst this sprawling expansion, urban counties like Harris and Collin saw a raw numerical growth eclipsing 10,000 residents, with Harris County flexing the most robust with over 53,000 new inhabitants. On the other end, Kleberg County bled the most residents in terms of raw numbers. As the country's demography shifts and shuffles, Texas holds its ground firmly as the nation's runner-up in state population, trailing only behind the behemoth California. However, it's South Carolina and Florida, dashing ahead by percentages, that sealed the top spots in state population growth for 2023, according to KXAN's report.
Even as the state continues to sprawl, Loving County stands as Texas' tiniest titan with a mere 43 residents, a sharp decline from 63 in the 2020 Census, making it also the smallest county in the entirety of the country. As the nation watches, Texas etches its place in the fabric of American growth, affirming once again that everything, including the headcount, is bigger in Texas.
