Two Texas-born war heroes, U.S. Army Sergeant Major Jerry Lynn Bell and U.S. Army Master Sergeant Mike Peña have been posthumously awarded the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor. The ceremony, led by Governor Greg Abbott, took place at the Texas Capitol to honor their valiant service in past conflicts.
"Today, we honor two men who raised their hand and answered the call for our country," Governor Abbott said during the event. "Each of these men continued a tradition of heroism that extends back to the very dawn of this great nation." According to an official statement from the governor's office, these medals are the highest military decoration awarded to service members from the Texas military forces. Senator Kelly Hancock and Representative Terry Wilson nominated Sergeant Major Bell and Master Sergeant Peña, respectively, for the prestigious accolades.
Sergeant Major Bell was recognized for his extraordinary service in the Vietnam War, particularly for a mission on February 25, 1970, where his actions in sustaining injuries and assisting in a helicopter crew's rescue were highlighted. Master Sergeant Peña was celebrated for his actions in World War II and the Korean War, where he gave his life during a valiant stand in September 1950. The awards were accepted on their behalf by family members.
In attendance alongside Governor Abbott were dignitaries such as Representative Cecil Bell, Jr., Representative Carrie Issac, and Representative Stan Kitzman, as well as the Adjutant General of Texas, Major General Thomas Suelzer. The ceremony served as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemembers like Sergeant Major Bell, a noted tank commander who served in various locations including Germany and Korea after Vietnam, and Master Sergeant Peña, whose posthumous awards include over 30 decorations such as the Distinguished Service Cross and the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Both men's legacies are marked by their unyielding dedication and the immeasurable sacrifices they made for the nation. As Texans and Americans, the collective memory of their heroism, as embodied by the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor, will be preserved and honored for generations to come.
