Bravado and determination marked the early morning hours of March 2, as three firefighters were injured while responding to a vicious blaze that consumed a vacant commercial building in Houston's Second Ward area. The fire erupted on Canal St. at Navigation, becoming a 2-alarm inferno requiring the efforts of over 100 personnel from the Houston Fire Department.
Officials say firefighters arrived on scene at 5:59 a.m., within five minutes of being dispatched, they were making an attack on the fire. However, efforts were complicated by the building's layout, with "multiple void spaces making it difficult to access all of the areas involved," according to the official report of Houston Fire Department. A primary search ensured no individuals were trapped inside as the structurally compromised building partially collapsed, prompting several "maydays".
Three firefighters emerged from the firefight with injuries related to head, neck, and back pain. They were treated on site before being transported to the hospital in stable condition. The fire, which led crews to switch from offensive to defensive combat tactics post-collapse, was ultimately subdued by roughly 8 a.m., ending a grueling two-hour battle with the flames.
What ignited the fire remains a mystery, as the Houston Fire Department's Arson investigators have taken up the cause to determine the starting point and the reason behind the blaze. HFD Arson's involvement underscores the severity of the situation, and the implications a fire of this magnitude holds for the surrounding community, said a source familiar with the investigation. The department's fleet, including Stations 8, 17, 15, 23, 6, 19, 20, 7, 9, 12, 18, 25, 11, 5, 30, 46, Rescue 42, Heavy Rescue 11 and Rehab 17, played roles in extinguishing the flames and safeguarding the Second Ward's residents and structures from further harm.
